Adopt an Eskimo Diet

    • A study published online in European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Mar. 23, 2011) looking for a link between Eskimos and the low incidence of heart disease focussed attention on their diet, which is rich in fish.


    • The study indicated that the cold-water fish Eskimos eat protects them against cardiovascular disease. Cold-water fish are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, substances that appear to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, reduce the swelling from rheumatoid arthritis and prevent the blood clots that can trigger a heart attack or stroke.


    • You can get these potent nutrients from supplements or fatty fish. Plan to have two or three fish servings each week. According to Mayo Clinic researchers this could reduce your risk of heart disease by one third. Examples of fish high in beneficial omega-3s include anchovies, bass, herring, salmon, rohu, sardines, trout (rainbow and lake) singhara and tuna (especially white, albacore and bluefin).


    • Omega-3s are also present in some plants. Good plant sources include canola oil, ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil, whole soybeans and soybeans oil, tofu and walnuts (whole and oil).Another option for vegetarians is to consider taking fish oil capsules.


  • However Dr. William B Kannel of Boston University Medical School and the founder of Framingham Heart Study, suggests, ‘My advice is to eat whole fish rather than fish oil, since you get a meal out of it.’
