  • It occurs regularly 1-2 weeks prior to the start of menstrual cycle ( monthly bleeding )
  • Symptoms wanes once bleeding starts  ( menstruation )

  1. physical symptoms like : fluid retention , swelling of body ,weight gain up to 1 kg ,nausea ,feeling bloated ,pain and discomfort in abdomen ,breast tenderness,changes in skin and hair, headache ,dizziness ,tiredness ,backache,muscle and joint pain ,trouble in sleeping etc
  2.  Behavioural symptoms : appetite changes or food cravings ,loss of interest in sex ,long term illness such as asthma or migraine may get worse
  3.  Psychological symptoms : feeling upset or emotional , feeling irritable or angry , mood swings
REASON BEHIND THE PRE MENSTRUAL SYNDROME :
  • Fluctuations  in the gonadal hormones during menstrual cycle & Chemical changes in neurotic synapses of brain are the probable reasons for PMS
WHO WILL EFFECT MORE FROM PMS :
  • Women with low intake of vitamins and minerals
  • Excessive drinking of alcohol and caffeine
  • Lots of intake of salty foods
  • Stress and emotional problems aggravate the PMS
  • Women suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome,irritable bowel syndrome and other endocrine disorders effect PMS more frequently
  • 80% of women report the symptoms during their menstrual cycle ,in that 20-30% will have PMS and 5-8% have severe PMS
  • PMS can effect menstruating women of any age and suffering vary depending on individuals
HOW WILL U GRADE THE PMS :
  1.  Mild PMS : symptoms do not interfere with the woman’s personal ,social and professional life
  2.  Moderate PMS : symptoms interfere with the woman’s personal , social and professional life .Daily functioning is possible ,although may be not to the usual level
  3.  Severe PMS : women withdraws from social and professional activities and cannot function normally

If the symptoms predominantly emotional and behavioural , it is said as “( PMDD)  – pre menstrual dysphoric disorder ”
