EXERCISE IN PREGNANCY -1

Old prescription in pregnancy constitutes “bedrest” .Where as 21st Century prescription constitutes “exercise,yoga and meditation “

WHY THE PREGNANT WOMAN SHOULD DO EXERCISE ?

Childbirth is the most stressful and painful event in woman’s life .Women should prepare herself to bear the stressful event .By taking nutritious diet and doing exercises she prepares herself for delivery.

so here are the benefits of exercise during pregnancy:

Regular exercise during pregnancy :

  1. strengthens muscles needed for delivery
  2. Improves posture
  3. Helps in reduction of backaches ,constipation ,bloating and swelling of body
  4. Gives energy and improves mood and wellbeing
  5. Lessens some of the discomforts of pregnancy
  6. Improves the sleep pattern .Strength and stamina will Increased
  7. Exercise of mother also benefit to the newborn baby like : newborn babies having less body fat at birth .Infants have a reduction in the incidence of infant colic . Greater neurodevelopmental scores in oral language and motar areas
Risks of sedentary lifestyle : 

If the women do not do regular physical activity or exercise then they suffer more complications in pregnancy like

  1. Loss of muscular tone and strength
  2. Decreased cardiovascular fitness ( heart)
  3. Execessive maternal weight gain
  4. Increased risk of gestational diabetes
  5. Higher risk of pregnancy induced hypertension
  6.  Development of varicose veins
  7.  Risk of deep vein thrombosis
  8.  Higher incidence of physical complaints such as dyspnea or low backache
  9.  Poor physiological adjustment to the physical changes of pregnancy
WHEN AND HOW TO START AN EXERCISE PROGRAM :
  • The best time to start an exercise program is in the second trimester (after 12 wks ) ,when the nausea ,vomiting and profound fatigue of first trimester have passed and before the third trimester ( after 24wks )
WHO DO NOT PERFORM EXERCISE OR CAN DO UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION :
  • Cardiac disease ,restrictive lung diseases ,severe anemia,poorly controlled seizures,poorly controlled diabetes,poorly controlled hypertension ,bone and joint diseases ,placenta Previa ( low lying placenta ) ,cervical weakness or circlage, previous preterm labour / premature rupture of membranes ,persistent bleeding in 2&3 trimesters ,pre eclampsia or pregnancy induced hypertension
  • Above said women prone to risk by doing exercises.Simple awareness can minimise complications
WHEN TO STOP THE EXERCISE :

When women experiences-

  1.  Execessive shortness of breath
  2.  Chest pain or palpitations
  3.  Giddiness or dizziness
  4.  Abdominal pain ,pain at back or pubic area
  5.  Leakage of amniotic Fluid
  6.  Vaginal bleeding
  7.  Excessive fatigue
  8.  Pelvic girdle pain
  9.  Less foetal movements
  10.  Headache
  11.  Calf pain or swelling
