The Gentle Way to Get Rid of Acne

  • Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It most commonly appears on the face and neck. It can be annoyingly persistent, slow to heal and when one begins to resolve, others seem to crop up.
    • Contrary to popular belief, you don’t get acne from eating greasy foods or chocolates. However, according to Mayo Clinic, studies have indicated that certain dietary factors, including dairy products and carbohydrate rich foods which increase blood sugar may trigger acne.

    • Increased amounts of hormones called androgens which increase during puberty and hormonal changes during pregnancy stimulate the production of sebum, an oily substance that can become trapped in the hair follicles on the skin. Too much sebum can trigger or aggravate acne. Men tend to have more acne than women because they have more androgens.

    • Taking a moment to thoroughly (but gently) wash your face is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent acne. Grime and grease that build up on your face all day need to be removed.

    • However don’t overdo washing. Twice a day is enough. Use a clean wash cloth, warm water and a mild soap or cleanser. Pat your face dry. You can do more harm than good by agitating your skin by scrubbing too hard. Antiseptic creams and lotions that contain benzoyl peroxide can help dry up pimples.

    • When using cosmetics it is best to go for powder cosmetics rather than cream products because they are less irritating. All make up should be removed before going to bed.

  • And finally, never pick or squeeze pimples.
